Engaging Hybrid Styles & In-Between Spaces

Muslim Americans, particularly women, are frequently placed into one side or the other of a dominant dichotomy, either of the woman who is oppressed by what is presumed to be the backwards religion and culture of Islam or of a woman who must abandon Islam in order to be liberated by Western values and culture. Many of these creative activists are claiming that their lives are more complicated than this dichotomy. Instead, they live in the space between these oppositional forces. These creators use hybrid styles to represent the intersectionality of their lives as individuals with multiple identity markers outside of Islam.
