The Resistance of Aesthetics and Art

Several young Muslim Americans engage with aesthetic styles–what you are able to see, feel, hear and experience through your senses–as a way to resist the misrepresentations of Muslims, and women in particular, as dull, backwards and lacking individuality. These examples illustrate how Muslims engage with fashion, art projects and photography to portray their individuality and creativity. Muslim Americans also use aesthetics to shift what is considered attractive, beautiful and pleasurable within American culture. Through their creative work, they make the claim that modest, Islamic styles also have a place within the American landscape.
